I've always thought it a bad idea to stick these directly into a cake--you just don't know what they're made of, and even the ones used in the Wilton classes and sold by Wilton aren't foodsafe--it doesn't claim to be, and doesn't say either way on the packaging.
The best thing to do is stick the flower wires into a
posy prick" or flower holder--sold by Wilton, and also florists, and in the floral section of Michael's, etc., or use plastic drinking straws.
